Solution

The triangle is a right angled triangle. We can use the Pythagoras theorem to solve the problem

Pythagoras' theorem states that for all right-angled triangles, 'The square on the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares on the other two sides'. The hypotenuse is the longest side and it's always opposite the right angle.

For this question,

Hypotenuse = 18

The other two sides are x and 9

Applying the Pythagoras theorem, we have

\begin{gathered} 18^2=x^2+9^2 \\ 324=x^2+81 \\ x^2=324-81 \\ x^2=243 \\ x=\sqrt[]{243} \\ x=15.58846 \\ x=15.59\text{ (nearest hundredth)} \end{gathered}

x = 15.59 (nearest hundredth)
