ratio 5/3

Longer / shorter

L/s = 5/3

longer segment exceeds the shorter by 14m

L = s + 14

proportion:

5/3 = x+14 / x

Solve for x

Cross multiply

5x = (x+14) 3

5x = 3x +42

5x-3x = 42

2x = 42

x = 42/2

x=21

Longer segment :

L = x + 14 = 21 + 14 = 35m
