7.NS.1.1 Mount Ojos del Salado is the highest mountain in Chile, with a peak at about 6900 meters above sea level. The Atacama Trench, just off the coast of Chile, is about 8100 meters below sea level (at its lowest point). What is the difference in elevations between Mount Ojos del Salado and the Atacama Trench?

The difference in elevations between the two is 15,000 meters

Here, we want to get the difference in elevation between Mount Ojos del Salado and Atacama Trench

From the question, we have the Mount Ojos elevation at 6, 900 meters above sea level; anything above the sea level should be accorded a positive elevation value

Thus,we have this elevation as + 6, 900 meters

For the Trench, it is below the sea level and thus its elevation should have a negative value which is -8,100 meters

The difference in elevation between the two is thus;

\begin{gathered} 6,900-(-8,100) \\ =\text{ 6,900 + 8,100 = 15,000 meters} \end{gathered}
