If 40 represents 50%, to find which number represents 100%, we can use the next proportion

(40)/(x)=\frac{50\text{ \%}}{100\text{ \%}}

Solving for x,

\begin{gathered} 40\cdot100=50\cdot x \\ (4000)/(50)=x \\ 80=x \end{gathered}

Then, 40 is 50% of 80
