The side of original square was 7.24 inches

Explanation:

(x+3)(x+3) =2(x)(x)

x² + 6x + 9 = 2x²

reduce:

x² - 6x - 9 = 0

(x + 1.24)(x - 7.24) = 0

x = 7.24
