A youth organization collected nickels and dimes for a charity drive. By the end of the 1-day drive, the youth had collected $42.35. If there were three times as many dimes as nickels, how many of each type of coin was collected?

We have the following:


0.05\cdot n+$0.10\cdot d=$42.35

now, d = 3*n, therefore:


\begin{gathered} 0.05\cdot n+$0.10\cdot(3n)=$42.35 \\ 0.05n+0.3n=42.35 \\ n=(42.35)/(0.35) \\ n=121 \end{gathered}

therefore:


\begin{gathered} d=3\cdot121 \\ d=363 \end{gathered}

The answer is 121 nickels and 363 dimes
