Translation is a term used in geometry to describe a function that moves an object a certain distance. The oject is not altered either by rotation, reflection or by resizing.
In a translation, every point of the object must be moved in the same direction and for the same distance
A translation can be described using words like "moved up 3 and over 5 to the left".
A notation can look like the below, (x+a) (y+b) where a and b are added to x and y respectively,
![T_((3,5))](https://img.qammunity.org/2023/formulas/mathematics/college/e0l1mpclx2bb49oh3v7ismojv7sh7vv9tc.png)
Another notation is a mapping rule of the form,
![(x,y)\rightarrow(x-5,\text{ y+3)}](https://img.qammunity.org/2023/formulas/mathematics/college/gbs2pa4ydtrgrob19zokfuqlf3b1676tyj.png)
The above notation tells us that x and y coordinates are translated to x-5 and y+3.
