The headlights of a car are mounted at a height of 3.5 ft. If the light beam drops 1 in. per 37ft, how far ahead in the road will the headlights illuminate?

Since 1 foot = 12 inches, then

We will change the 3.5 feet to inches


3.5*12=42\text{ inches}

Since the light beam drops 1 inch per 37 feet

Then to find the distance for 42 inches,

Multiply 42 inches by 37 feet/1 inch


\begin{gathered} d=42*(37)/(1) \\ d=1554\text{ feet} \end{gathered}

The answer is 1554 feet
