Step 1: We have the lenght of the Legs:

• Leg 1 = 12 ft

• Leg 2 = 5 ft

Step 2: Now, we can calculate the length of the hypotenuse or the actual distance across the pond, this way:

a² = b² + c²

a = √b² + c²

a = √12² + 5²

a = √144 + 25

a = √169

a = 13 ft

Step 3: Finally, we need to convert ft to yards, as follows:

13 ft = 13/3 yards

13 ft = 4 1/3 yards
