We want to evaluate the expression:

y^2+5y-9

when y=-4. For doing so, we will replace each instance of the letter y by -4 on the expression given. Thus, we get:

\begin{gathered} (-4)^2+5(-4)-9 \\ =16-20-9 \\ =-4-9 \\ =-13 \end{gathered}

This means that the result of the evaluation is -13.
