A triangle is congruent by HL if the hypotenuse and one of the legs is equal between the triangles.

\begin{gathered} x=y+3 \\ x+1=3y \end{gathered}

replace the first equation into the second one

\begin{gathered} y+3+1=3y \\ y+4=3y \\ 4=3y-y \\ 4=2y \\ (4)/(2)=y \\ y=2 \end{gathered}

replace y into one of the equations

\begin{gathered} x=2+3 \\ x=5 \end{gathered}

x must be equal to 5 and y to 2 in oder for the triangles to be congruent by hl.
