Twice the difference of a number and 5 is 9



use the variable w for the unknown number​.

Solution:

Denote the unknown number by w.

Now, the difference between a number (w) and 5 is:

w-5

twice the above is:

2(w-5)

and from the statement we know that the above must be equal to 9, that is:

2(w-5) = 9

then, the solution would be:

2(w-5) = 9
