The answer is very simple.

The difference between Grant and Moses paid can be stated like this:

Moses spent $ 36.81 so he spent more money than Grant. Since the shoes Grant bought cost $ 36.18.

$ 36.81 is greater than $ 36.18

$ 36.18 is smaller than $ 36.81

Those are the two ways to express inequality.
