(2x-4)(x+5)=0

happens if and only if one of the next options occurs

\begin{gathered} 2x-4=0 \\ x+5=0 \end{gathered}

Then, x can only be one of the next two options

\begin{gathered} 2x-4=0 \\ 2x=4 \\ x=2 \end{gathered}

or

\begin{gathered} x+5=0 \\ x=-5 \end{gathered}

In conclusion, the only two options for x to satisfy the equality are x=2 or x=-5
