Activity 13: Are You My Mommy?Directions: Using the Text Editor, the information on the page titled "Are You My Mommy?", and your Punnett Squares, write a brief essay in which you explain how you determined which baby belonged to which family. Be sure to discuss the following concepts and explain how they related to your investigation and your conclusions::Predicting and Determining Genotypic and Phenotypic Ratios:Using Punnett Squares:Dominant and Recessive Traits:Genotypes and Pedigrees:The Law of Independent Assortment and the Product Rule of Probability

Answer: Using Punnet squares is a great help in determining which baby belonged to whcih family. This is a helpful tool that predicts the variations and probabilities that can come from cross-breeding such as predicting and determining genotypic and phenotypic ratios. When we say phenotype, it is the observable trait of organisms such as eye color, hair color, etc. While genotype can mean the entire collection of genes an offspring inherited from its parents. Punnet squares also help whcih trait will be expressed whether it will be a dominant trait or recessive trait.

The dominant trait refers to the trait that is phenotypically expressed (homozygous dominant or heterozygous dominant). While the recessive trait will be expressed when two recessive copies of the gene are present. Using the pedigree is also important because it shows a relationship between family members. It also shows which individuals have the inherited disease and variants. The Law of independent assortment, states that the chromosome inherited from either the father or mother can sort into any gamete, producing the potential for tremendous genetic variation (can be determined using Punnet squares). The product rule of probability is the chance that a certain trait will occur and this could be determined through Punnet squares.
