5=(5)/(8)x+(1)/(2)x-4

solve for x

(5)/(8)x+(1)/(2)x-4=5

add 4 on both sides

(5)/(8)x+(1)/(2)x-4+4=5+4

simplify

(5)/(8)x+(1)/(2)x=9

find the common minimum of 2 and 8 and multiply

(5)/(8)x\cdot\: 8+(1)/(2)x\cdot\: 8=9\cdot\: 8

simplify

\begin{gathered} 5x+4x=72 \\ 9x=72 \end{gathered}

divide both sides by 9

(9x)/(9)=(72)/(9)

simplify

x=8
