Conjugation is a process in which two paramecia line up, side by side, and fuse together. They form a cytoplasmic bridge, where the male pronucleus and the female pronucleus join together, forming a diploid zygote. The process of conjugation leads to an exchange of a haploid equivalent of genetic material between the participants, and this exchange is substantially symmetric and complete.
