Gene editing refers to changing the DNA sequence of a cell or organism in a specific way.
In humans, gene editing has been used in somatic cells to treat diseases such as HIV and sickle-cell disease. It can be used not only to treat diseases but also to prevent them.
The editing of germinal cells (ovum and sperm) is subject to debate because it involves modification not only of the genome of the person giving their consent but of their offspring. Thus, it poses more safety and ethical issues.
