this is what you are told in the problem

x+y=23............1 (the sum)

x-y=7.................2 (the difference)

PS make sure to number your equations

in equation 1 we can take x over so that we form a new equation labelled equation 3

y=23-x...........3

sub 3 into 2

x-(23-x)=7

x-23+x=7

2x=7+23

2x=30

x=15.........4

sub 4 into 1

15+y=23

y=23-15

y=8
