a. 5x+3=17. subtract 3 on both sides then u get 5x=14 then you simply by dividing by 5 on each side which gives you x= 14/5 = 2.5 so ..... 5x+1= 15

b. first you rearrange the terms to -3y+5=6, then you subtract 5 from each side so it's 3y = 1. then divide both of the equation by the same term ( -3) to get y= -1/3. so 5 - 3y² = ..... 3× -1/3 = -1 and -1² = -1 so 5 - (-1) = 6
