In order to find the midpoint of the points (7, 1) and (-1, 3), we can use as the x-coordinate the average of the x-coordinates and same for y. That is, for a pair of points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2), the midpoint is:

\begin{gathered} M(x_m,y_m) \\ x_m=(x_1+x_2)/(2) \\ y_m=(y_1+y_2)/(2) \end{gathered}

Now, calculating the midpoint, we have:

\begin{gathered} x_m=(7+(-1))/(2)=3 \\ y_m=(1+3)/(2)=2 \end{gathered}

So the midpoint is (3, 2).
