Answer

Sarah = 53 miles

Jean = 43 miles

Explanation:

Let the mile ran by Serah be x

Let the mile ran by Jean be y

Since both ran a total mile of 96

Mathematically, x + y = 96

x + y = 96 ------------- equation 1

Since Sarah ran 10 more miles than Jean

Therefore,

Sarah = Jean + 10

Since Jean = y and Sarah = x

x = y + 10 ------------ equation 2

Substitute the value of x in equation 1

(y + 10) + y = 96

open the parenthesis

y + 10 + y = 96

collect the like terms

y + y = 96 - 10

2y = 86

Divide both sides by 2

y = 86/2

y = 43 miles

Therefore, Jean ran a total distance of 43 miles

According to the equation 1,

x + y = 96

y = 43miles

x = 96 - 43

x = 53 miles

Therefore, Sarah ran a distance of 53 miles
