We need to solve

(5)/(6)-(5)/(12)

If we multiply by 2/2 the first fraction, we have

(5)/(6)\cdot((2)/(2))-(5)/(12)

this is the same fraction because 2/2 is equal to one. In other words,

(5)/(6)\cdot((2)/(2))=(5)/(6)\cdot1=(5)/(6)

that is, we have not altered the fraction. However, in this form its more easy to see that

(5)/(6)\cdot((2)/(2))-(5)/(12)=(10)/(12)-(5)/(12)

because

(5)/(6)\cdot((2)/(2))=(10)/(12)

but now, both fraction have the same denominator. Hence, we obtain

(10)/(12)-(5)/(12)=(10-5)/(12)=(5)/(12)

and the answer is 5/12.
