We are told that Ms. Wharton bought some books at a book sale.

We donot know how many books she bought overall, but we know that she bought 20 paperback books.

We also know that these 20 paperback books represent 80% of the whole books she bought.

The problem is to determine how many books she bought in all, using the information given.

Let all the books she bought in all be represented by x.

Then by the information given,

80% of x is 20.

80% is the same as 80/100. and

80/100 = 4/5

so,

4/5 of x is 20.

We need to solve for x in the equation:

(4)/(5)x\text{ = 20}

Doing this, we multiply both sides of the equation by 5/4

\begin{gathered} x\text{ = 20}*(5)/(4) \\ =\text{ 25} \end{gathered}

Therefore, Ms. Wharton bought 25 books in all.
