The polygon given is a trapezium

The area of a polygon is given by

((a+b))/(2)\text{ x h}

where

\begin{gathered} a\text{ and b are parallel the sides} \\ h\text{ is the perpendicular height} \end{gathered}

From the question given

The parallel sides are 12yd and 16yd

\begin{gathered} so\text{ that} \\ a=12yd \\ b=16yd \end{gathered}

and perpendicular height is 6yd

The next step is to substitute the values into the formula to obtain the area

\begin{gathered} A=((12+16))/(2)\text{ x 6} \\ \\ A=(28)/(2)\text{ x 6} \\ \\ A=\text{ 14 x 6} \\ \\ A=84yd^2 \end{gathered}
