Jimmy’s family moved to a tropical climate. For the year that followed, he recorded the number of days that had a temperature above 40 degrees C each month. His data contained -

14, 14, 10, 12, 11, 13, 11, 11, 14, 10, 13 and 8
(question 10 does not use the set of numbers above)

4) If, instead, there are 5 more days per month that had a temperature above 40 degrees C, what will be the mean for the data? =

6) If the number of days per month that had a temperature above 40 degrees C, doubles each month in that year, what will be the median for the data? =

10) A cat consumes 2 cups of milk every day. How much milk does that cat drink on an average in a week? =

Answer:

4) 11.75 6) 23 10) 14

Explanation:

4) To find the mean, you would find the average of all the data. To do that, you add all the numbers together, then divide them by the number of numbers there are. So: (14+14+10+12+11+13+11+11+14+10+13+8)/12=141/12=11.75

6) To find the median, you would find the number in between all the numbers. So: 16,20,22,22,22,24,26,26,28,28,28. The median of all of this would be between 22 and 24, so it would be 23.

10) Since one week has 7 days, and the cat drank 2 cups per day, you can multiply 7 and 2 to get 14, and that would be your answer.
