If you meant to write out
\tan^2(x) + 1 = \sec^2(x), then this is an identity. It can be derived from the pythagorean identity
\sin^2(x)+\cos^2(x) = 1. Divide every term by
\cos^2(x) to end up with the first equation mentioned.
