Sue has five grain bins on her farm. The bins are 42 feet in diameter and 28 feet high to the roof. The roof has a height of 7 feet. She does not fill the roof. (Note: 1.25 cubic feet = 1 bushel)a. How many cubic feet are in one bin?b. How many bushels can she store on the farm?

Solution

Part a

For this case we can assume that each grain present a cylindrical form then the volume is given by:


V=\pi(r^2)h

For this case r= 42/2= 21ft and h = 28 ft

Then the volume for one bin is:


V=\pi(21ft)^2(28ft)=38792.386ft^3

Part b

For this part we can do the following conversion:


38792.386ft^3\cdot(1bushe)/(1.25ft^3)=31033.91bushels

And since she has 5 bins the total of bushels are:

31033.91*5= 155169.54 bushels
