1) Expand


\tt t-5=5t-17

2) Add 5 to both sides


\tt t -5+5=5t-17+5


\tt t=5t-12

3) Subtract 5t from both sides


\tt t-5t=5t-12-5t


\tt -4t=-12

4) Divide both sides by -4


\tt \cfrac{-4t}{-4}=\cfrac{-12}{-4}


\tt t=3
