We want to know the value of the expression:

40-9y

when y=2. For doing so, we will replace the value onto the expression, by multiplying it by 9, and then substracting to 40 the result. This is,

\begin{gathered} 40-9y=40-9(2) \\ =40-18 \\ =22 \end{gathered}

So, the value of the expression is 22.
