System of Equations
Solve graphically the system:
6x - 3y = 12
y = x - 2
Dividing the first equation by 3:
2x - y = 4
Solving for y:
y = 2x - 4
Now we graph the lines by giving x two values and calculate the corresponding values of y.
For the line y = 2x - 4, we use x = 0 and x = 4:
y = 2*0 - 4 = -4. Point (0, -4)
y = 2*4 - 4 = 4. Point (4, 4)
For the line y = x - 2, we use x = 0 and x = 4:
y = 0 - 2 = -2. Point (0, -2)
y = 4 - 2 = 2. Point (4, 2)
Now we graph both lines in the same grid:
The solution is the point of intersection of both lines: (2, 0)
