We would determine the amount of soil by applying the formula for determining the volume of a cylinder which is expressed as

Volume = pi x radius^2 x height

From the information given,

Width of the cylindrical pot = 8

This is the same as the diameter of the pot

We know that

radius = diameter/2

Thus,

radius = 8/2 = 4

height = depth = 40

pi = 3.14

Thus,

Volume = 3.14 x 4^2 x 40

Volume = 2009.6

The voulme of soil needed to fill the pot is 2009.6 cubic inches
