The formula of the distance between two points (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is

d=\sqrt[]{(x2-x1)^2+(y2-y1)^2}

Since the two given points are (-1, 5) and (2, 9), then

x1 = -1 and x2 = 2

y1 = 5 and y2 = 9

Substitute them in the formula above to find the distance between them

d=\sqrt[]{(2--1)^2+(9-5)^2}

Remember (-) x (-) = (+)

\begin{gathered} d=\sqrt[]{(2+1)^2+(4)^2} \\ d=\sqrt[]{(3)^2+16} \\ d=\sqrt[]{9+16} \\ d=\sqrt[]{25} \end{gathered}

Find the value of the square root

\begin{gathered} d=\sqrt[]{25} \\ d=5 \end{gathered}

The distance between the 2 points is 5 units
