We subtract equation (1) from equation (2), in order to solve for x, like this:


\begin{gathered} (x+1)^2+(y+2)^2-(y+2)^2=16-4(x-3)\text{ } \\ (x+1)^2=16-4x+12 \\ x^2+2x+1=16-4x+12 \\ x^2+2x+4x+1-16-12=0 \end{gathered}
