This means 22 pairs are autosomes and the last pair is of sex chromosome. During gamete formation meiosis occurs and sperms contain either 22+X or 22+Y chromosomes whereas ovum contains 22+X chromosomes.

When the two gametes fuse they again form the genotype to be 44+XX or 44+XY maintaining the genetic composition of the individual to its original.
