To find the axis of symmetry of the given equation:


Y\: =\: x^2\: +\: 4x\: -\: 5

the graph is,

The axis of symmetry goes through the vertex of the graph.

The formula to find the axis of symmerty is


\begin{gathered} y=ax^2+bx+c\: \: \\ x=(-b)/(2a) \end{gathered}

thus,


\begin{gathered} a=1,\: b=4 \\ x=(-4)/(2\cdot\:1) \\ x=-2 \end{gathered}

Thus the axis of symmetry is x=-2.
