Jesus sells boy-scout cookies. He gets paid 15% of his first $120 of sales and 19% of any sales more than $120. Last month he sold $385 worth of cookies. How much will his gross: paycheck be? How much did he earn at the 15% rate? What were his cookie sales ABOVE $120 (that will get the higher commission rate) How much did he earn at the 19% rate? How much was his gross paycheck?

Given :

Jesus sells boy-scout cookies. He gets paid 15% of his first $120 of sales and 19% of any sales more than $120.

Total sales = $385

So, divide total sales into two sections as following :

385=120+265

So, the gross paycheck will be = 15% off 120 + 19% off 265 =

0.15\cdot120+0.19\cdot265=18+50.35=68.35

So, gross paycheck = $68.35

================================================

How much did he earn at the 15% rate?

it will be 15% of 120 = 0.15 * 120 = $18

What were his cookie sales ABOVE $120 (that will get the higher commission rate)

it will be = 385 - 120 = 265

How much did he earn at the 19% rate?

it will be = 19% off 265 = $50.35

How much was his gross paycheck?

it will be = 18 + 50.35 = $68.35
