4k+5=3(4k-14)+71

open the bracket,


4k+5=12k-42+71

collect like terms,


4k-12k=-42+71-5

simplify,


\begin{gathered} -8k=24 \\ \text{ divide through by -8} \\ (-8k)/(-8)=(24)/(-8) \\ k=-3 \end{gathered}

Therefore, k = -3
