The carpenter cuts the following fraction of the board:

3(3)/(8)

The board initially has the following length:

6(1)/(2)

The first thing we will do, is to transform the mixed fractions into ordinary fractions, to do this we multiply the number that expresses whole units by the denominator and this is added to the denominator.

\begin{gathered} 3(3)/(8)=(3+(3\cdot8))/(8)=(3+24)/(8)=(27)/(8) \\ \\ 6(1)/(2)=(1+(6\cdot2))/(2)=(1+12)/(2)=(13)/(2) \end{gathered}

The second thing to do is to subtract the cut length from the length of the board.

(13)/(2)-(27)/(8)=((8\cdot13)-(2\cdot27))/(16)=(104-54)/(16)=(50)/(16)=(25)/(8)

We already have an answer, but this is expressed in a simple fractional, now we will transform it into a mixed number.

(25)/(8)=3(1)/(8)

In conclusion, the answer is:

3(1)/(8)
