Answer:
This tapestry, as said, depicts the battle of Hastings, and the events leading to it. This is an important historical tapestry because it actually shows what happened at that time. These events would be hard to explain through written documentation. It includes detailed images to depict what happened. This is a historical ‘documentation’ of what happened and can be used to study how the battle took place and the events that led up to it. Sadly, this beautiful work is not very reliable because it is not written documentation, and it was not made during the battle. Some would call it not relevant because it is a depiction and not exactly accurate on what actually happened. Even though it is historical, that doesn’t mean that what it depicts is fully true or actually what happened. If the artist wasn’t there, how can they honestly tell (or even know) what happened in the Battle. So, even though this work actually shows what happened through the battle, it cannot be fully accurate on what happened, and who Is who. It also does not show the exact order, and only showed certain parts. Another thing to mention is that if you did not know what actually happened in the battle, you do not know what these scenes depict, which makes it hard to actually know what is going on in these images. Yet, something good about these historical tapestries is that these images are very detailed and depict these scenes in ways that a written work never could.
This tapestry depicts in many ways different parts of the era. It includes the clothing and fashion that people wore, the architecture, the occupational lives, and social classes. This tapestry shows different things worn by different people in society. The king wears robes, and finer, more detailed clothing than the people around him. The people who work in the castle wear different clothes then the people who build the boats. The knights wear armor and chainmail. It also shows the architecture of that time through all the castles, churches, houses, and other buildings that these people built. It also shows people's daily and occupational lives, including those who work at the castle for the king, those who are farmers and boat builders, and soldiers. You can even kind of tell their social status just by looking at what they do and what they wear. You can also see the differences in social status throughout the tapestry through the servants wading on the king, to the nobles, to cooks, and many other of the people who are on the tapestry. Even through this depicts a war, you can still see other information about their society through the images that are created when depicting these scenes. It is a rich and detailed representation of the battle of Hastings, but also gives historians information about normal medieval life and society during that time. This allows us to explore and study the past through visual representations, to actually see stuff from a time where pictures couldn’t be available.
