mutilply equation 2 by 4

8x + 20y = 124

subtract the equation

8x + 20y - 8x - 3y = 124 - 39

17y = 85

y = 85/17 = 5

put y = 5 in equation 2

2x + 5(5) = 31

2x + 25 = 31

2x = 31 - 25

2x = 6

x = 6/2
