The main idea is to subtract from the dividend (the number 986) an easy multiple (x10, x5, etc.) of the divisor (the divisor is 26).

In Sven's case:

• He began with 10 x 26 and ,used it three times.

• Since the leftover (206) was less than (10 x 26), he used a lesser multiple (7 x 26 = 182).

• He did this until the leftover is less than 26.

,

• Next, he added all the multipliers of 26:


10+10+10+7=37

Therefore:


986/26=37\; R\; 24
