Subtracting the first equation from the second one we get:

2x+y-x-y=4-5.

Adding like terms we get:

x=-1.

Substituting x=-1 in the first equation we get:

-1+y=5.

Adding 1 to the above equation we get:

\begin{gathered} -1+y+1=-5+1, \\ y=6. \end{gathered}

Answer:

x=-1\text{ and y=6.}
