Alexi bought 5 T-shirts for $12 each and 3 pairs of socks for $2 a pair. Which expression shows how much Alexi spent in dollars. Explain

a) 5 × 12 x 3 × 32
b) 5 × 12 + 3 × 32
c) (5+3) × (12 + 2)

b. 5 x 12 + 3 x 2


Alexi bought 5 shirts. Given that each of them costs 12 dollars, we can say that the equation for their price is:

12 + 12 + 12 + 12 + 12 or just 5 x 12


Now, Alexi also bought socks. 3 pairs of them, in fact. Given that each pair was an astounding 2 dollars, we would get this equation:

2 + 2 + 2 or just 3 x 2


Of course, Alexi bought these things together, so they must pay for both things. The total price would be

5 x 12 + 3 x 2 or 66 dollars
