Let K represent the page of the book that Kayla ison at the end of t days into the month, and let E represent the page of the book thatEvelyn is on at the end of t days into the month. Write an equation for each situation,in terms of t, and determine whether Kayla or Evelyn is farther along in the bookafter 2 days.

K represent the page of the book that Kayla is on at the end of t days

E represent the page of the book that Evelyn is on at the end of t days

so,

At the beginning of the month:

Kayla was on page 19 and Evelyn was on page 49

During the month :

Kayla will read 15 pages per day and

Evelyn will read 9 pages per day

so,

K = 19 + 15 t

E = 49 + 9 t

So, after 2 days: t = 2

K = 19 + 15 * 2 = 19 + 30 = 49

E = 49 + 9 * 2 = 49 + 18 = 67

So, the difference between them = 67 - 49 = 18 pages

So,

Evelyn will be 18 pages farther along in the book than Kayla after 2 days
