Jacob is paid on a graduated commission scale. He earns 10% commission on is first $1,000 in sales. He earns 15% commission on all sales over $1,000. Last month, his total sales were $3,400. What was his total commission?

Since Jacob had sales of $3400, we have that the first $1000 will earn 10% commission and then the rest of the sales ($2400) will earn 15%. Then, we have the following:


\begin{gathered} 1000\cdot10\%=1000\cdot.0.1=100 \\ 2400\cdot15\%=2400\cdot0.15=360 \\ \text{Total commission:} \\ 100+360=\$460 \end{gathered}

therefore, Jacob's total commission is $460
