SOLUTION

This is a case of similar rectangles.

Let us list out the given parameters:

Old height = 11.5 inches

Old width = 12.5 inches

New height = 2.3 inches

New width = x

The formula we will use to relate these parameters is:

\frac{old\text{ height}}{new\text{ height}}=\frac{old\text{ width}}{new\text{ width}}

Now substituting the parameters into the formula above:

\begin{gathered} \frac{old\text{ height}}{new\text{ height}}=\frac{old\text{ width}}{new\text{ width}} \\ (11.5)/(2.3)=(12.5)/(x) \\ 5=(12.5)/(x) \\ 5x=12.5 \\ x=(12.5)/(5) \\ x=2.5 \end{gathered}

The new reduced width will be 2.5 inches.
