Reese drove the entire first day of a trip then her brother drove 30 miles per day after that. After 5 days they traveled a total of 480 miles. Write an equation to represent the total distance traveled. If this continues, how many miles will they have traveled after 15 days?

Let's begin by listing out the information given to us:

Reese drove the entire first day = x

Her brother drove 30 miles per day = 30 /day

After 5 days: distance = 480 miles

The equation becomes:

x+30t=480

t = 5 days, we have:

\begin{gathered} x+30(5)=480 \\ x+150=480 \\ x=480-150=330 \\ x=330miles \end{gathered}

x = 330 miles

After 15 days, the total mile travelled is:

\begin{gathered} d=x+30t \\ x=330miles,t=15days \\ d=330+30(15)=330+450 \\ d=780miles \end{gathered}

distance travelled = 780 miles
