Assume that the number is x

So add 4 times x and 8, then equate the sum by 9

\begin{gathered} 4* x+8=9 \\ 4x+8=9 \end{gathered}

To solve the equation subtract 8 from both sides

\begin{gathered} 4x+8-8=9-8 \\ 4x=1 \end{gathered}

Divide both sides by 4

\begin{gathered} (4x)/(4)=(1)/(4) \\ x=(1)/(4) \end{gathered}

Since x represents the number

So the number is 1/4
