Solution

Let multiple choice questions be x

and

Let word problems be y

The sum of points for all question = 90

The number of questions = 25

A) The two variables that represent the situation are x for multiple-choice questions and y for word problems

B) The system of equations to represent the scenario are

3x +4y = 90----------(1)

x + y = 25 ----------- (2)

C) From equation (1 ) y = 25-x

substituting for y in equation (1) yields

3x + 4(25-x) =90

3x + 100 - 4x = 90

3x -4x = 90 -100

-x = -10

Hence x = 10

Substituting for x = 10 in equation (2), we have

10 + y = 25

y = 25 -10

y = 15

Therefore, Ms. Snows' test will have 10 multiple choice questions and 15-word problem questions.
